No to hunting with Galgos and other breeds – photos from the anti-cruelty anti-hunting demo in Arrecife, Lanzarote on 4th February 2018.
Pet owners in Lanzarote who lost a beloved pet, have had until now no option to give their deceased pet a decent and dignified send-off. If your pet died at the vets or was found dead in the road, it will be sent to the municipal animal crematorium in Arrecife and chucked in with all the other animals, including roadkill and leftover carcasses from slaughter houses. To a loving pet owner, this is very non-personal and quite horrible really. If you have a garden, then sometimes burial is possible, but many of us live in apartments, and some of us go and find some secluded spot in the country to do a discrete burial. Mind you, both of the latter are illegal.
But someone has been listening to the many voices of pet owners here, and we now finally have a crematorium for our furbabies.
Hela Pet Crematorium is in Arrecife, and their cremation service (based on a 5kg animal), including one of their basic urns, costs around €75, so is very affordable to most people.
I know this is quite a sad subject, but an important one too. I for one, would love to be able to make my kitties’ passing as loving and luxurious as all the things that I have given them in life.
Having two 18 year old tabby boys makes me aware every day that their clocks are ticking and we don’t have that much time left together, and I am glad that when the time comes, I now have the option to see them off to the Rainbow Bridge with the dignity the deserve…
I had the pleasure of meeting the friendly feral street cats that live all over Jerusalem whilst on my trip there in April of this year. Now you can enjoy my new 2017 calendar which has 13 beautiful images of these cats, and makes a great Christmas present for both cat lovers and animal photography aficionados.
€0.50 of each calendar will be donated to The Kennel Klub Lanzarote, one of our local animal charities.

I bought this lovely pet blanket at our local Lidl here in Puerto del Carmen yesterday, but after only one day of use, it looks like *this*, can you believe it?!
The material is obviously totally unsuitable for use with pets, and after only one day it looks like it is a few months old.
When I went back today to ask for a refund, I was told that it has “already been used” and I couldn’t get a refund. They also said “oh well, cats do scratch”, but that doesn’t justify the material being crap and it looking like this after ONE DAY! I would expect it to look like this only after many months of use…
I’m not a happy bunny and have written a stinky email to Lidl headquarters, and will have to wait and see what they say…
In the meantime, anyone planning to buy one of these blankets from Lidl, I can’t say I warned you! 😉
This is the complaint I wrote to Lidl headquarters in Spanish:

UPDATE: Despite contacting them various times over a 10 day period, I never got a reply, only an automated email saying that my query would be dealt with within 48 hours. Which did not happen. SHAME ON YOU, LIDL!

It has come to my attention via my good friend of mine, that a U.S. company called Hinterland Herb Co. have behaved in a truly unbelievable way, after being contacted by her about wishing to buy their organic catnip from their Etsy shop.
When being told the rather steep price of their product, my friend said that she could buy organic catnip from Amazon for a fraction of the price they quoted. After that, Hinterland Herb got really nasty, calling her “cheap” and saying “if your cat chokes and dies on the sawdust they add as filler, or ingests some of the toxic pesticides that is often present on the cheap junk, rest assured in knowing that it is only $40 or so to get a new cat. Good that you saved a few bucks.“, followed by calling her “a lying cat murderer“!

This is totally unbelievable and any company treating potential or existing customers like that should be reported and avoided at all cost!
My friend did some research on the company and could not even find a full address where they are based, nor a phone number, which makes one wonder how legit these people really are. But at least she found the name of the owner is Larry Peters.
Well, Larry… I think you either owe my friend (and whichever other customers you have insulted with your disgusting behaviour) an apology, or you should simply stop trading altogether. Any company who wants to stay in business, simply does not say nasty things like this to their customers! It’s a sure fire way to shut you down, because know that word gets round very quickly on the internet and social media these days…
Read my latest article on Dogster…
Few breeds of dogs have to endure the same kind of hardship as the Galgo Español (Spanish Greyhound). Galgos are extremely gentle and calm; get on fantastically with young children, other dogs, and even cats; and would like nothing more than spend the whole day lazing around on a comfy sofa.
It was a really good turnout today at Rancho Texas Lanzarote, where the construction of the new dolphinarium is under way as we speak.
I do hope we made enough noise, for them to stop what they are doing, but fear that greed and profit will, sadly, prevail in the end. But then… we simply have to KEEP FIGHTING!
