No to hunting with Galgos and other breeds – photos from the anti-cruelty anti-hunting demo in Arrecife, Lanzarote on 4th February 2018.
Pet owners in Lanzarote who lost a beloved pet, have had until now no option to give their deceased pet a decent and dignified send-off. If your pet died at the vets or was found dead in the road, it will be sent to the municipal animal crematorium in Arrecife and chucked in with all the other animals, including roadkill and leftover carcasses from slaughter houses. To a loving pet owner, this is very non-personal and quite horrible really. If you have a garden, then sometimes burial is possible, but many of us live in apartments, and some of us go and find some secluded spot in the country to do a discrete burial. Mind you, both of the latter are illegal.
But someone has been listening to the many voices of pet owners here, and we now finally have a crematorium for our furbabies.
Hela Pet Crematorium is in Arrecife, and their cremation service (based on a 5kg animal), including one of their basic urns, costs around €75, so is very affordable to most people.
I know this is quite a sad subject, but an important one too. I for one, would love to be able to make my kitties’ passing as loving and luxurious as all the things that I have given them in life.
Having two 18 year old tabby boys makes me aware every day that their clocks are ticking and we don’t have that much time left together, and I am glad that when the time comes, I now have the option to see them off to the Rainbow Bridge with the dignity the deserve…
I wrote a post on Canna-Pet’s natural cannabinoids back in September last year and how they have helped my boy Spider, and thought I would write a quick update on how he is doing now.
Spider has been on Canna-Pet for about a year now, and the adenocarcinoma that my vet removed from his ear a year ago has shown no signs whatsoever of growing back, even though she told me that it “may be back in a year or so”. His kidney values have also improved, which is quite a miracle in a cat that has been in kidney failure for the last two years! This is surely in part due to Canna-Pet, but also helped by a supplement called Renafood which I give him once a day.
Apart from that, Spider’s fur has become extremely soft, he is more cuddly and responsive/vocal than ever, and his loud crying in the middle of the night only happens occasionally now. He has also become more active again – behaving like a much younger cat! See this video of him jumping after his ping pong ball. 🙂
All in all, I am extremely pleased with these developments, and would recommend Canna-Pet to anyone who has tried just about anything, but nothing has helped, for their cats or dogs with cancer, epilepsy, diabetes, digestive tract problems, allergies and skin conditions, to name just a few.

I had the pleasure of meeting the friendly feral street cats that live all over Jerusalem whilst on my trip there in April of this year. Now you can enjoy my new 2017 calendar which has 13 beautiful images of these cats, and makes a great Christmas present for both cat lovers and animal photography aficionados.
€0.50 of each calendar will be donated to The Kennel Klub Lanzarote, one of our local animal charities.

I bought this lovely pet blanket at our local Lidl here in Puerto del Carmen yesterday, but after only one day of use, it looks like *this*, can you believe it?!
The material is obviously totally unsuitable for use with pets, and after only one day it looks like it is a few months old.
When I went back today to ask for a refund, I was told that it has “already been used” and I couldn’t get a refund. They also said “oh well, cats do scratch”, but that doesn’t justify the material being crap and it looking like this after ONE DAY! I would expect it to look like this only after many months of use…
I’m not a happy bunny and have written a stinky email to Lidl headquarters, and will have to wait and see what they say…
In the meantime, anyone planning to buy one of these blankets from Lidl, I can’t say I warned you! 😉
This is the complaint I wrote to Lidl headquarters in Spanish:
Barbarella Silke Buchner
UPDATE: Despite contacting them various times over a 10 day period, I never got a reply, only an automated email saying that my query would be dealt with within 48 hours. Which did not happen. SHAME ON YOU, LIDL!
Read my latest article on Dogster…
Few breeds of dogs have to endure the same kind of hardship as the Galgo Español (Spanish Greyhound). Galgos are extremely gentle and calm; get on fantastically with young children, other dogs, and even cats; and would like nothing more than spend the whole day lazing around on a comfy sofa.
On my trip to Jerusalem last week, I wasn’t prepared how many wonderful kitties I would meet – I almost didn’t miss my own 3 rascals at all (but don’t tell them!).
On the 3rd day of my holiday, I also got the chance to do a bit of volunteering at the JSPCA (Jerusalem Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals), and experience first hand how they work to help the animals over there – and they are really doing an amazing job!
Below are just a few piccies as a taster, but CLICK HERE if you want to see all the cat pictures on Flickr which I took of the street cats and JSPCA cats last week.
The Mad Cat Lady betrays her cat husbands Lugosi & Spider with…. A DOG!!!! In an hour or so the whole internet will talk! :O
This Podenco doggie is called Chica, and even though she´s not a cat… she´s the sweetest thing and, cat lady or not, you just can´t help not loving her. 🙂
Finally! A useful website that will help you make a denuncia regarding mistreated or abandoned animals in Spain!
Here in Lanzarote and the Canary Islands it´s particularly bad because nobody seems to be enforcing the law.
The site is in Spanish only.
Our local animal shelter had an open day today to promote adoptions of pet dogs and cats. The event was incredibly well attended, but as I am more interested in socialising with kitties (and dogs too, but they tire me out too much!), most of the photos featured here are of — yes you guessed it — felines…
The full photo set of cats, dogs and also some humans can be found here on Flickr.

But older kitties are so beautiful too and need homes as well!
