My 2017 Cat Calendar Is Out! Street Cats of Jerusalem

I had the pleasure of meeting the friendly feral street cats that live all over Jerusalem whilst on my trip there in April of this year. Now you can enjoy my new 2017 calendar which has 13 beautiful images of these cats, and makes a great Christmas present for both cat lovers and animal photography aficionados.

€0.50 of each calendar will be donated to The Kennel Klub Lanzarote, one of our local animal charities.

Lidl Pet Blankets – Warning: Diabolical Quality!

I bought this lovely pet blanket at our local Lidl here in Puerto del Carmen yesterday, but after only one day of use, it looks like *this*, can you believe it?!

pet-blanket-grey

The material is obviously totally unsuitable for use with pets, and after only one day it looks like it is a few months old.

When I went back today to ask for a refund, I was told that it has “already been used” and I couldn’t get a refund. They also said “oh well, cats do scratch”, but that doesn’t justify the material being crap and it looking like this after ONE DAY! I would expect it to look like this only after many months of use…

I’m not a happy bunny and have written a stinky email to Lidl headquarters, and will have to wait and see what they say…

In the meantime, anyone planning to buy one of these blankets from Lidl, I can’t say I warned you! ;)

This is the complaint I wrote to Lidl headquarters in Spanish:

Saludos Cordiales
Barbarella Silke Buchner

UPDATE: Despite contacting them various times over a 10 day period, I never got a reply, only an automated email saying that my query would be dealt with within 48 hours. Which did not happen. SHAME ON YOU, LIDL!

Scooby North America Rescues Galgos Dogs in Spain and Finds Them Homes in the U.S.

Read my latest article on Dogster…

Scooby North America Rescues Galgos Dogs in Spain and Finds Them Homes in the U.S.

Few breeds of dogs have to endure the same kind of hardship as the Galgo Español (Spanish Greyhound). Galgos are extremely gentle and calm; get on fantastically with young children, other dogs, and even cats; and would like nothing more than spend the whole day lazing around on a comfy sofa.

Cats of Jerusalem – My Catty Vacation in Israel

On my trip to Jerusalem last week, I wasn’t prepared how many wonderful kitties I would meet – I almost didn’t miss my own 3 rascals at all (but don’t tell them!).

On the 3rd day of my holiday, I also got the chance to do a bit of volunteering at the JSPCA (Jerusalem Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals), and experience first hand how they work to help the animals over there – and they are really doing an amazing job!

Below are just a few piccies as a taster, but CLICK HERE if you want to see all the cat pictures on Flickr which I took of the street cats and JSPCA cats last week.

STOP Animal Mistreatment, Abandonment and Neglect in the Canary Islands

Finally! A useful website that will help you make a denuncia regarding mistreated or abandoned animals in Spain!

Here in Lanzarote and the Canary Islands it´s particularly bad because nobody seems to be enforcing the law.

The site is in Spanish only.

SARA Lanzarote Animal Shelter Open Day – Promoting Adoptions

Our local animal shelter had an open day today to promote adoptions of pet dogs and cats. The event was incredibly well attended, but as I am more interested in socialising with kitties (and dogs too, but they tire me out too much!), most of the photos featured here are of — yes you guessed it — felines…

The full photo set of cats, dogs and also some humans can be found here on Flickr.

Four Pawed Pet Bowls!

I want you to meet Dylan Kendall, a professional cat rescuer & talented artist!

In her spare time she helps rescue and find homes for homeless four pawed cats. Most recently, she was able to trap a starving kitten by her home who spent an entire night crying for help. All it took was a trap, some yummy cat food, 10 minutes and the kitten would then forever be spoiled! Dylan brought him inside and gave him time to rest for the night. He moved so fast, that she named him Rocket! This kitten has grown to love humans, fellow felines and a 3 legged Chihuahua.

Four legged pet bowls

Dylan is a ceramist and a home accessories designer and she has designed these dog and cat bowls perched on 4 little paws called “Four Pawed Pet Bowls“, which are just so darn adorable!  They are raised to help enforce healthy digestion, and are made from bacteria-resistant stoneware.

However, she needs to successfully fund them on Kickstarter first in order to bring them onto the market. Can I ask you all to help her out by backing her pledging as little as 1 USD (you can use your Facebook account to sign in, no need to create a Kickstarter account unless you want to!). The way it works, you will only get charged if the goal is reached, and if not, you just won´t. If the goal is reached, they can start delivering these gorgeous bowls by October.

Policeman rescues run over dog

This man is a true hero.  People like him give me hope for mankind. I want to hug him and thank him so much for staying by this dog´s side.  *sniff*

Sadly, the dog didn´t make it, his injuries were too severe, but he knew until the end that someone *cared*.

Fouling up someone else´s country…

Yesterday afternoon I saw an elderly woman let her little black dog do a huge shit on the pavement of a busy street near the Biosfera Shopping Center, Puerto del Carmen, and then nonchalantly walk on without cleaning it up. I accosted her, asking her in Spanish if she could please pick up the dog mess, in the most non-aggressive manner possible.  She obviously didn’t speak the lingo and I realised she was German, so I said the same in German. She answered “oh well, you see little dog nuggets in the street all the time”, and I said “well, maybe you could start setting a good example?”

She then just “tutted” and walked away. I was FUMING.  So I quickly went back, got out a tissue and picked up the dog turd and put it in a small plastic bag, hoping that I would still be able to catch up with her. Luckily, she was standing outside the Spar supermarket a little way down the road, where I walked up to her, saw that she had a few shopping bags standing at her feet, and I took this opportunity to shove the dog shit into one of those shopping bags saying “Here you go. Prezzie for you.” (in German), and walked off.

What do you think? Will this teach her to pick up her dog´s shit next time, at least when there are lots of people around, which there were at the time? Or is she just going to continue with this disgusting behaviour? I really wish I had all of this on video because then she would be liable to a nice fine…

Another thing that pisses me off about this behaviour is that foreigners like her a.) don´t even bother learning the language and b.) get away doing stuff like this in the foreign country they´re living in. No doubt, she wouldn´t dare to do this in Germany!
