My 2017 Cat Calendar Is Out! Street Cats of Jerusalem

I had the pleasure of meeting the friendly feral street cats that live all over Jerusalem whilst on my trip there in April of this year. Now you can enjoy my new 2017 calendar which has 13 beautiful images of these cats, and makes a great Christmas present for both cat lovers and animal photography aficionados.

€0.50 of each calendar will be donated to The Kennel Klub Lanzarote, one of our local animal charities.

2 Cellos Live in Madrid

I had a fantastic time at the 2 Cellos gig last Saturday in Madrid. It was an open air concert at the botanical gardens at the University of Madrid, and the 2 Cellos came on just after sunset, and because of a summer heatwave, the outside temperatures were still around 28C at that time of night.

In case you are not familiar with this duo, they are two rather handsome Croatian lads, who play a mix of classical, pop, rock and heavy metal on, yes you guessed it, 2 cellos!  Starting off gently with one of Bach’s Cello Suites, this was followed by some Spanish guitar played on cello (the crowd breaking into football chant “Olé Olé Olé Oléeeeee”, with the two lads joining in on their cellos!), and they then ripped into the heavier stuff like AC/DC, The Prodigy, Michael Jackson, Nirvana and Led Zeppelin.

These guys are truly amazing, and if they come to a town near you, I highly recommend you go and see them. 🙂

Impressions of Jerusalem – Photos From My Israel Trip

I really had the most amazing time visiting Israel from 8th to 15th April 2016.  Smack in the middle, on the 12th, was my 50th birthday, which was the reason I went over there for.

Apart from Jerusalem, I also visited Bethlehem, The Dead Sea and Tel Aviv, all of which are completely different from the Holy City, so it kind of feels like I had various holidays all rolled into one.

Here are my photos of impressions of Jerusalem, and the full gallery with all the photos I took you can see here on Flickr.

Cats of Jerusalem – My Catty Vacation in Israel

On my trip to Jerusalem last week, I wasn’t prepared how many wonderful kitties I would meet – I almost didn’t miss my own 3 rascals at all (but don’t tell them!).

On the 3rd day of my holiday, I also got the chance to do a bit of volunteering at the JSPCA (Jerusalem Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals), and experience first hand how they work to help the animals over there – and they are really doing an amazing job!

Below are just a few piccies as a taster, but CLICK HERE if you want to see all the cat pictures on Flickr which I took of the street cats and JSPCA cats last week.

NO TO Wearing Swimwear in Shops & Restaurants

Lanzarote is a popular holiday destination with a tropical climate, lots of gorgeous beaches and sunshine all year round, but the following is one of the small prices we have to pay for living in paradise (and don’t get me wrong, it is worth paying!).

We have to put up with holidaymakers walking around in nothing more than their swimming trunks or bikinis in the street, into the shops and even eating at restaurants & cafés.

Personally, I don’t mind as long as they wear next to nothing on the beach or even walking along the beach front Avenida like that, but I draw the line when I’m sitting in a restaurant or café when a fat old man (or even a skinny young man or woman!) sits down at the table next to me in nothing more than his speedos while I’m trying to eat. Not only is this extremely inconsiderate and disrespectful to other people, but it’s also horribly unhygienic, sitting with their bare, sweaty flesh, covered in sun cream, on those chairs!

Having complained at quite a few restaurants where this has happened, I simply get told by staff that “the boss won’t allow us to do that” or, speaking to the boss him/herself, “sorry, but we can’t do that”. Unfortunately, most restaurants and smaller shops here really can’t afford to lose business by kicking out people who are not dressed in a decent way, so other diners like myself just have to put up with it, move table (if there is another one free), or leave.

Yesterday I found that our Lidl in Puerto del Carmen had put up this sign though.

Lidl no to swimwear

Thanks Lidl! Absolutely love it! Even though it’s very unlikely, I can only hope that at least the bigger supermarketst and restaurants here are all going to do something similar soon….

10 Years in Lanzarote

Wow, it´s already been 10 years since I moved here on 24th February 2004!

I had to get up at the unholy hour of 03:30 hrs on that day to be taken to the airport, together with my two fur kids Spider and Lugosi, to make the big move to another country.  We left at around 04:30 hrs for my 09:00 hrs British Airways flight from Heathrow to Lanzarote – 1 1/2 hrs´ drive to the airport, and we had to get there 3 hours before the departure time, because the boys had to be checked in at the cargo area, which was a long way away from the main airport where I myself had to check in.

Armed with my huge suitcase and said two felines, I arrived on the island at around 13:30.  I was told that the cats would come out on the same conveyor belt as my suitcase, so I waited patiently, but after 30 mins everybody else had left and no other luggage came out…  I panicked, of course, but after asking another airport employee where I could find my boys, they told me that I had to pick them up from the cargo area!  I only just made it there (in a taxi) because they were closing early because of the Carnival, so I was running around like mad, just getting there in time to pick up my babies!

After that I was off to settle into my new apartment in Puerto del Carmen, followed by throwing myself into the Carnival festivities, of course!  Sadly, it took Spider and Lugosi 3 weeks to fully come out from under the bed – they didn´t get used to their new home easily, especially after the trauma of the long journey, but they rule the roost now…

On 8th March, it´s going to be my 10th Carnival here in Lanzarote.
Here´s to another 10…. 🙂
