Bad News for Medical Cannabis Users in Lanzarote

I have been a medical cannabis user since 2013, ever since I became aware that there was a cannabis association called “Cannapharmacia” in the nearby town of Playa Honda. Before that, I would never even have considered using cannabis to treat my chronic fibromyalgia and rheumatoid arthritis pain, because I would have had to buy it on the street, meaning you never know what you get and also because it’s expensive and dealers are unreliable.

The wonderful thing about Cannapharmacia is that, as a member (which costs only €20 a year), I can simply go there 7 days a week, get buzzed into the club by the girl at reception, and buy my cannabis products inside. At first I bought the actual weed which, because I don’t smoke, is not the best option for me, but I found that it helps my night time pains so much where ordinary codeine-based painkillers feel just like eating candy, and I would put up with the smoke scratching down my windpipe every night before going to bed. For a short while they had the rather expensive cannabis oil which also did the trick really well, but they stopped selling that.

Then someone started making capsules filled with 15mg, 25mg or 50mg of cannabis, and I found the 25mg ones were the most effective painkillers / sleeping aids out of the lot. However, these are relatively expensive, and in the end I decided to go for the cannabis cookies, which are not only cheap (€4 for 5 biscuits, which includes my 20% discount as a medical user), but eating one 2 hours before bedtime, would send me to sleep without any pain or spasm and tightness in my muscles.

The sad thing is that since last week, Cannapharmacia is CLOSED.

This is thanks to 3 idiots who decided to pose as owners of the association and tried to change the lock to the front door, and then continued to wreck the interior of the club and assault some of the staff. I do not have all the exact details of this incident, but from my own point of view, this means I am back to square one which I was at before I found Cannapharmacia.

From what I know, there are at least 700 members who are medicinal users like myself who have come to depend on the pills, the cookies or the weed to treat various conditions from cancer to multiple sclerosis and chronic pain, as well as other autoimmune illnesses like lupus erythematosus.

And we have nowhere to go now for our medication.

Personally, I am thinking of growing my own plants on my balcony again, which I did a couple of years ago with kinda mixed results and a rather small yield. However, there’s no point doing this during our tropical summer heat, because it’ll be too hot for the plants, plus there are too many bugs around. So, right now, this is not an option.

I am hoping that Cannapharmacia can work out a secure system of how to protect its members and staff from b*stards like this, and also hope that the police will be prosecuting these individuals in the manner that they deserve.

As for now, I am going to have to buy some weed from a local cannabis club here in my own town of Puerto del Carmen. Sadly, they do not have any pills or biscuits, and the oil they have costs €100. And the price of their weed is twice as much as at Cannapharmacia! However, when you are desperate for pain relief, you just have to find the money for it somewhere

Below is a video Cannapharmacia posted on their Facebook Page depicting part of the incident (in Spanish).

Interview with Freddy’s Cathouse – TNR and Feral Cat Rescue Charity

Last week I met up to do an interview with Freddy of Freddy’s Cathouse in Playa Blanca, which is a small town in the west of our island of Lanzarote. His charity and him are 100% dedicated to helping improve the quality of life of approx. 130-140 feral cats, with 26 feeding stations under his care.

Lidl Pet Blankets – Warning: Diabolical Quality!

I bought this lovely pet blanket at our local Lidl here in Puerto del Carmen yesterday, but after only one day of use, it looks like *this*, can you believe it?!

pet-blanket-grey

The material is obviously totally unsuitable for use with pets, and after only one day it looks like it is a few months old.

When I went back today to ask for a refund, I was told that it has “already been used” and I couldn’t get a refund. They also said “oh well, cats do scratch”, but that doesn’t justify the material being crap and it looking like this after ONE DAY! I would expect it to look like this only after many months of use…

I’m not a happy bunny and have written a stinky email to Lidl headquarters, and will have to wait and see what they say…

In the meantime, anyone planning to buy one of these blankets from Lidl, I can’t say I warned you! ;)

This is the complaint I wrote to Lidl headquarters in Spanish:

Saludos Cordiales
Barbarella Silke Buchner

UPDATE: Despite contacting them various times over a 10 day period, I never got a reply, only an automated email saying that my query would be dealt with within 48 hours. Which did not happen. SHAME ON YOU, LIDL!

Being there, doing that!

Yes, most of us have “been there, done that”.

At just a month shy of my 50th birthday, I am still “being there, doing that“!!!! :D

NO TO Wearing Swimwear in Shops & Restaurants

Lanzarote is a popular holiday destination with a tropical climate, lots of gorgeous beaches and sunshine all year round, but the following is one of the small prices we have to pay for living in paradise (and don’t get me wrong, it is worth paying!).

We have to put up with holidaymakers walking around in nothing more than their swimming trunks or bikinis in the street, into the shops and even eating at restaurants & cafés.

Personally, I don’t mind as long as they wear next to nothing on the beach or even walking along the beach front Avenida like that, but I draw the line when I’m sitting in a restaurant or café when a fat old man (or even a skinny young man or woman!) sits down at the table next to me in nothing more than his speedos while I’m trying to eat. Not only is this extremely inconsiderate and disrespectful to other people, but it’s also horribly unhygienic, sitting with their bare, sweaty flesh, covered in sun cream, on those chairs!

Having complained at quite a few restaurants where this has happened, I simply get told by staff that “the boss won’t allow us to do that” or, speaking to the boss him/herself, “sorry, but we can’t do that”. Unfortunately, most restaurants and smaller shops here really can’t afford to lose business by kicking out people who are not dressed in a decent way, so other diners like myself just have to put up with it, move table (if there is another one free), or leave.

Yesterday I found that our Lidl in Puerto del Carmen had put up this sign though.

Lidl no to swimwear

Thanks Lidl! Absolutely love it! Even though it’s very unlikely, I can only hope that at least the bigger supermarketst and restaurants here are all going to do something similar soon….

Empty the Tanks – Protest Against New Dolphinarium at Rancho Texas Lanzarote

Lending our voices to the worldwide protests today against imprisoning dolphins and other cetaceans in water-filled concrete bunkers, like the one that Rancho Texas Park (which is a small local zoo) are building right now in Lanzarote.

I was disappointed though at the lack of actual *voices* making themselves heard.  Having looked at some of the other protests around the world today, there was a lot more noise being made to tell people what we are about and what we are protesting against.

Here in Lanzarote, people were just standing there, too busy chatting to each other, and appearing to expect passers-by to automatically know what our protest was about by seeing our posters. There were no chants or handing out flyers to educate tourists entering the zoo to let them know what we were actually doing there, and I feel the organiser was worrying more about us getting chucked out of the car park (which is a risk you take at any protest!) , than actually wanting to make an impact and get seen and heard. Talking to the press is, of course, all good and well, but a group of people just standing there looking cute is, in my opinion, rather pointless and I feel that we made little, if any, impact at all.

Yes, I know, there´s always a lot more “politics” to it all, but still, I can´t help express my disappointment – and that´s just a small part of what my blog is for: expressing my opinion! :)

Anyway, here are my photos and video.

My Chat on Lanzarote Mix Radio

I had the pleasure of getting invited by Jerry Lefever to appear on local Playa Blanca/Lanzarote radio station Lanzarote Mix last Friday, 29th May 2015.

Here´s a short part of it that I selfie-filmed with my mobile phone camera – hence my mouth movements being out of sync, haha! ENJOY.
